Sandia in Space

Abstract: Sandia National Laboratories was established in 1949 and its roots can be traced back to the Manhattan Project in World War II. As a Federal Funded Research and Development Center, Sandia has a unique partnership arrangement with the government and 70 years of successful execution of this model. The Labs has five major program portfolios: Advanced Science and Technology; Nuclear Deterrence; Energy & Homeland Security; National Security Programs; and Global Security. The Global Security area protects the nation from strategic threats at home and abroad, by developing and deploying integrated technical solutions and expertise.

Evolving threats are increasing the complexity of a secure space environment and Sandia is focused on helping mitigate these risks for our nation.

Sandia plays a large role in securing the nation. As part of the mission at the Labs, Sandia is responsible for development, deployment and operation of remote sensing systems that provide the intelligence community and DoD with unparalleled real-time decisional information. Through research and development efforts, Sandia enhances these systems through improved data exploitation and analytics.
