Traditional physics and astronomy courses once were primarily presentations with question-and-answer sessions. Our understanding of how people learn has revolutionized the techniques we use to teach, facilitate, and learn new concepts. This highly interactive session will demonstrate a variety of lunar phases formative assessment strategies such as modeling and kinesthetic activities, and conceptually challenging think-pair-share questions to enable deeper understanding of why our Moon changes shape, and will incorporate discussions as to how to apply these strategies to other physics and astronomy concepts. Takeaways may include an increased understanding of lunar phases as well as new ideas for both students and instructors on ways to increase learning.
